Where The Nations Is and Why It Has That Name
The Nations runs north from Charlotte Avenue to Centennial Boulevard and the river bend, roughly between 44th Avenue North and 63rd Avenue North. The east-west streets carry state names: Indiana, Louisiana, California, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee. 51st Avenue North is the main street, with Frothy Monkey at 1400 51st Avenue and the Southern Grist taproom at Stocking 51, the restored hosiery mill at 51st and Centennial. Fat Bottom Brewing is on 44th Avenue North. West Park and its community center sit at the west end at 6105 Morrow Road.
Nobody has settled where the name came from. The most repeated account ties it to the Chickasaw, who met early settlers near what is now West Park; another points to the state-named streets. The only sign that says it is the old “Est. 1913 The Nations” sign on 51st Avenue. The 15-story silo mural of longtime resident Lee Estes, painted by Guido van Helten in 2017, is the neighborhood’s landmark.
Which Nations Streets Cost the Most
The busiest streets over three years. 54th Avenue North is the condo corridor (Silo West and Silo House), which is why its median is a third of the others. The state-named avenues run $600,000 to $800,000 at the median because most of their sales are new or newer houses.
